Your car came with an owner’s manual. The app you trust to lock it should have one too.

Today we’re publishing the first edition of the BetterKey Owner’s Manual.

It explains how commands reach your car, what each feature depends on, what success actually means, and where connected-car technology has limits. You can read it online, print it, or save it as a PDF.

Why write a manual for an app?
#

Most apps only need to explain what to tap. BetterKey also needs to explain what happens after you tap.

When you send a command, it travels from your iPhone or Apple Watch to BetterKey, then through your connected-services provider and automaker before reaching your vehicle over its cellular connection.

A successful response means the request was accepted and sent.

It does not mean BetterKey independently watched the locks move.

That distinction matters. So do the limits of background processing, vehicle data that is not real-time, and automations that depend on permissions or other features. We wanted those details in one place, written plainly.

The complexity already exists. We would rather explain the dependencies and where things can fail than hide them behind a spinner. That transparency is part of how we build BetterKey.

What the manual covers
#

The manual covers the full BetterKey system:

  • What you need before connecting a vehicle
  • How lock and unlock commands reach your car
  • What a successful, failed, or unconfirmed command means
  • How each automation works and what it requires
  • Apple Watch, Siri, and Shortcuts
  • Notifications, permissions, and background behavior
  • Security, privacy, and how to remove access
  • Troubleshooting, service dependencies, and technical limitations

It also explains what BetterKey is not. It is not a Bluetooth key, an Apple Wallet car key, a GPS tracker, or a replacement for your physical key or your automaker’s app. BetterKey builds on your vehicle’s connected services rather than replacing them.

A manual, a Help Center, and a blog
#

BetterKey now has three kinds of documentation, each with a different purpose:

  • Help Center — “How do I…”
  • Blog — “Why did you build this?”
  • Owner’s Manual — “How does the system actually work?”

We will revise the manual as BetterKey changes. Each edition includes its revision date so you can tell when it was last updated. As BetterKey gains new features or connected-car technology evolves, the manual will evolve with it.

If BetterKey is something you rely on every day, you deserve to understand how it works. That’s what the Owner’s Manual is for.
